Productivity

There have never been more distractions in our lives than in today’s world.  Social media alone is one of the biggest black holes of time waste ever created.  Throw in instant messaging at work, texts, email, endless news scrolls and you can kill an entire day at work or home and not get anything meaningful accomplished.  Your day might start with an innocent peek at Facebook and the next thing you know, an hour or more has passed. The constant interruptions kill our ability to concentrate and think deeply about the topic in front of us.

There are better ways to stay connected but also get real work accomplished.  It boils down to having a plan and working your plan.

My career pivoted forward after embracing the simple productivity ideas in David Allen’s seminal book on personal and business productivity, Getting Things Done: The Art of Stress Free Productivity.  The notion of planning your personal activities first before your work activities was a huge lift for my family and personal life.

There are so many myths people use as their disclaimer for not getting things done or starting new activities.  For example, I wasn’t motivated or inspired to exercise today.

Check out James Clear’s blog and his recently released book, Atomic Habits on personal productivity where he dispels the myths preventing you from taking action.  I love Clear’s story about how he became an expert in the field of Personal Productivity.  Several years ago, he committed to writing two blog posts a week about the topic. At the time, he was just a guy with an idea, now he’s a renowned figure on the topic.  As you’ll learn in his book and blog, small and consistent steps forward win the day.
